Klara and the sun by  Erin  Keyes Yr 12

I based my submission off a book I read recently that I really loved - Klara and the Sun. It’s a beautiful book set in a alternative future following the life of an AI called Klara and her observations and relationships of the family she’s sent to live with. It’s really interesting to create artwork for it featuring Klara as it reminds us what what we forget - she’s only technically a machine.

I wrote this song during lockdown talking about how everything seems suddenly so quiet, closed up and how I kept trying to motivate myself to learn new things, have fun and not be bothered by the external environment.
I had so much fun creating the song, production, singing it and recording it.

My submission is a collaboration with Eva Furey from Music Strand who sings 'Pure Imagination' from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The choreography of my dance follows a girl reading her favourite book and becoming part of the story. I have tried to represent the importance of reading and allowing yourself to be wrapped up in a fantasy world to escape your worries.

In response to the brief of 'word', I decided to create a song using the work of someone renound in the literary world - Shakespeare. This song is 'Sonnet 18 - Shall I Compare Thee To A Summer's Day?' put to music. I decided to choose this sonnet as I believe it to be one of Shakespeare's most recognisable pieces and the wonderfully emotive language inspired me.

Lizzy Pop by Sophie Khan-yaseen Yr 12

Lizzy Pop is about the reluctance that arises in the face of letting things go. In my story, Lizzy represents the part of me that wants the best for me. I saw a picture of how sunflowers turn towards the sun when it’s rising, and I was inspired to write this poem thinking of how beautiful that is.

Spiders by Sophie Khan-yaseen Yr 12

Spiders is about feeling alone when you’re struggling. The spiders crawling away represent people who leave. In Spiders, there’s a sense of being unsafe created by strange and bleak imagery.

Incurably Romantic by Sophie Khan-yaseen Yr 12

Incurably Romantic is about forever loving someone for who they were, even if they’ve since then changed. There’s a languid, slow pace to the poem which represents the feeling of love.

The third column.

This submission is inspired by my favorite books, and how they can transport the reader to a different world, whilst also introducing the idea of telling untold stories and dissolving hate in the world. Reading is universal to us all, and can and should be accessible to all, which in this poem I am aiming to showcase.

Abbie Hoffman was a social activist, speaker and writer. His books Revolution for the hell of it and Steal this book are some of the most influential parts of the 1960s peace movement. He sadly died but it's still speculated if it was an accident, suicide, or an elimination by the US Government.
